Jayson Tatum

NBA DFS Ownership Analysis for Saturday, 1/28/23 – How Many Mavs is Too Many Mavs?

The first thing I do when I sit down to start building NBA DFS lineups is check out the early ownership projections. Things can change quite a bit between the morning and lock, but it’s still a great way to see where you stand in any given slate.

You’ll want to factor in actual projections, matchups, Vegas lines, and injury news, too. But gauging which players are being overlooked or over-owned is pretty critical to your success.

With that, I’ll point out three ownership findings I think are particularly interesting.

Dwight Powell, C, Dallas Mavericks ($38k)

  • Projected ownership: 37.9%

This projected is probably too low, to be honest. I agree with the Mavs love overall, but you will still probably want to pick your spots.

Fading Powell may have it’s perks, too. Most of the Dallas guys you want are proven scorers or wing players, considering Luka Doncic is out with an ankle injury.

Does that mean we can’t use Powell? No. He projects well (29 fantasy points), and a date with the Utah Jazz isn’t scary by any means.

However, Powell is currently slated to be the highest own Mavs player. What if he gets in foul trouble or stinks up the joint? It could be worthwhile to ignore him and stack other Dallas players.

Jayson Tatum, PF, Boston Celtics ($11.1k)

  • Projected ownership: 4.1%

The price for Tatum is admittedly steep, but there’s actually a lot of incentive for just blindly paying up for him tonight.

First, a date with the Los Angeles Lakers is pretty inviting. L.A. is going to be better defensively with The Brow back in the saddle, but he was on hand in the first meeting between these two teams.

That didn’t stop Tatum from lighting up the scoreboard.

Tatum has a higher ceiling than usual with Marcus Smart sidelined, too. His price will scare people away all by itself, but all this Mavs love will also keep people busy elsewhere.

There is easily enough value to spike this ownership number. I’m also aware there are other studs like Damian Lillard and Domantas Sabonis that look appealing on this slate.

However, if a guy with Tatum’s upside is going unowned like this, I’ll be ready to pounce.

Josh Christopher, SG, Houston Rockets ($3.2k)

  • Projected ownership: 0.4%

This one does depend on the starting lineup for me. You can also throw Garrison Matthews and Daishen Nix into the conversation, too.

However, Nix actually projects for 12% ownership as things stand, so Christopher could go overlooked despite Jalen Green joining KPJ on the sidelines.

Christopher bombed in a spot start his last time out, but that allows recency bias to be our friend. That, accompanied by everyone flocking to Dallas options, could allow for some low-owned value.

All of this aside, I’d definitely be prioritizing Dallas players tonight. I do think you can get strategic with who you play, of course, and you’ll also need to decide which elite options need to be in your lineup.
